When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.
The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 12 months; however; this can vary, depending on the patient. Following the 12-month period, we encourage you to continue wearing your retainers one or two nights a week in order to maintain your smile.
You must be very careful when handling your retainers, as they are fragile and costly to replace. You are given a special case for your retainers; please make sure you keep them in this case when you are wearing them! Do not put them in your pocket, and avoid leaving them out where your pet could find it. Never place your retainer in hot water, as this may distort it.
To clean your retainers, brush them with toothpaste, using cool water, and periodically soak them in cleanser or mouthwash. If you are not able to brush your teeth after eating, rinse off your retainer, rinse your mouth, and place the retainer in your mouth or in its case.
If you lose or break your retainer, call the office immediately. There will be a fee to replace or repair the appliance.
